ROCHESTER, N.Y. --
The Elmira College women's tennis team concluded the fall portion of its 2017-18 schedule on the road on Monday against Nazareth College. Senior Megan Fitzgerald '18 earned the Soaring Eagles' lone point of the afternoon at No. 1 singles, as EC was defeated 8-1 in the Empire 8 Conference match, which was played at the Mendon Racquet Club.

Fitzgerald improved her singles record to 8-4 overall and 5-3 inside E8 play by toughing out a three-set victory over Nazareth's Allison Friends, who entered Monday on a four-match win streak against conference competition. After falling in the first set, 6-3, EC's senior captain responded to win the second set by an identical score before taking the super tiebreaker, 10-7, successfully avenging her loss to Friends from last season.

The Golden Flyers, who already locked up the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Empire 8 Tournament, began the contest by sweeping all three doubles matches. Friends and teammate Marisa Joyce took the first doubles match from Fitzgerald and Katy Jewett '21 by an 8-3 score. The loss is only the fourth of the fall season for Fitzgerald and Jewett, who boast an 8-4 record as Elmira's top tandem. At second doubles, the duo of Emily Green '18 and Sarah Hill '19 won five games, the most of any EC doubles team against the Golden Flyers, but were defeated 8-5 by Maeve Morgan and Erin Shantz.

Outside of the first singles match, Naz did not drop a set in singles play, as the Golden Flyers won matches two through six in straight sets. Green put up the strongest fight at third singles by taking five total games from Elizabeth Karstedt, but the senior netter was handed a 6-3, 6-2 loss.
