ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's field hockey team will look to avenge last season's double-overtime loss against Oswego State on Wednesday, September 13, when the Soaring Eagles travel to face the Lakers in non-league action. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. at Oswego's Laker Turf Stadium.
CAREER FIRSTS
During Saturday's 3-2 loss against Hartwick, a trio of Soaring Eagles reached milestones with the first points of their respective careers. Sophomore midfielder
Emily Selbert '20 and freshman forward
Janie Kempf '21 both scored their first-ever collegiate goals against the Hawks, while junior forward
Matilda Kennedy-Butler '19 recorded her first point with an assist on Selbert's tally in the 17th minute.
SERIES HISTORY
The Soaring Eagles are 5-11 all-time against the Lakers, but away from the Murray Athletic Center, the series is nearly even at 3-4. Elmira's last win over Oswego State was on the road in October of 2015, when the Purple and Gold blanked the hosts by a 3-0 final score. That win snapped a seven-game skid for EC against the Lakers. The Soaring Eagles controlled the series from 2004-07, having won all four meetings in that span, including two on the road in Oswego.
SCOUTING THE LAKERS
Last year when the Lakers earned a double-overtime win over the Soaring Eagles, they were still undefeated at 4-0. This year, however, Oswego State is still searching for its first victory of the 2017 season after falling to Houghton College, 4-1, and St. Lawrence University, 5-1. The team has struggled to produce offense despite returning five of its six goal scorers from 2016. Monica Harvey, who paced the Lakers with seven goals and 16 points a year ago, and Lacey Woite, who tallied six goals and 13 points, both returned as upperclassmen, but the duo have been held to just one assist through the first two games of the season. Former State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Rookie of the Year, Sarita Charap, now a senior, is the starter for the Lakers in the cage. She's 0-2 with a 4.50 goals-against average and a .743 save percentage heading into the bout with EC.
LOOKING AHEAD
Elmira will return home for their second Empire 8 Conference contest of the season on Saturday, September 16, when the Soaring Eagles welcome Washington and Jefferson College to the MAC for a 1:00 p.m. bout.
