PINE VALLEY, N.Y. -- Senior captain Megan Fitzgerald '18 reached another milestone in her illustrious four-year career this afternoon, as the Thomaston, Connecticut, native became Elmira College's all-time wins leader in women's tennis. Fitzgerald picked up wins at No. 1 singles and doubles, which increased her career win total to 75, surpassing former teammate Ayaka Yoshino '16 for the college's all-time record. Fitzgerald's record-setting performance highlighted today's contest, which resulted in a 6-3 setback to visiting Alfred University.
 
Fitzgerald, who tied the college's wins record a week ago, also moved into a two-way tie for first place in EC history for career singles wins this afternoon as well. She ties Yoshino for the top spot, as both Soaring Eagles sit atop the leaderboard with 37 all-time singles victories. Additionally, Fitzgerald is one doubles win shy of tying EC's all-time doubles wins record, as she heads into tomorrow's match against Fredonia with 38 career doubles victories.
 
The record-breaking win came at the No. 1 doubles position, as Fitzgerald and freshman Katy Jewett '21 teamed up for a one-sided 8-2 victory. With the win, the duo improved to 6-1 on the year and extended their win streak to four consecutive matches.
 
Emily Green '18 and Sarah Hill '19 fell in a close battle at the second doubles spot, as their counterparts from Alfred edged them in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-4). Elmira's third doubles tandem of Eliza Johnson '21 and Cassie Brown '21 dropped an 8-4 decision, as the Saxons entered the singles portion of today's match with a 2-1 lead.
 
Hill earned a straight-set victory, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 4 singles to level the match at 2-2. It marked the second straight singles victory for the Naples, New York, native and her third of the 2017-18 campaign. Fitzgerald quickly followed suit with a no-nonsense 6-1, 6-1 drubbing of her opponent at the No. 1 spot, which put the Purple and Gold out in front, 3-2.
 
Alfred's Miranda Sakala evened the match at 3-3 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Green at No. 3 singles. Johnson also fell in straight sets at the No. 2 position, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2, which gave the Saxons their first lead of the match since the conclusion of doubles, 4-3.
 
Brown was the next EC player to finish, as she fell in straight sets by a single break in both sets at No. 6 singles, 7-5, 6-3. Jewett rounded out today's action at the No. 5 spot with a heartbreaking loss in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. The loss was Jewett's first of her freshman season.
