ONEONTA, N.Y. -- First-year netter Cassie Brown '21 was a double-winner for the Elmira College women's tennis team on Friday night, as the Soaring Eagles came out on the losing end of a 6-3 decision against Hartwick College in Empire 8 Conference action.

Brown and fellow freshman Eliza Johnson '21 were EC's lone winners in doubles action, as the duo combined to defeat Hartwick's Sofie Brennan and Kylie Sullivan, 8-4, at third doubles. It marks the third victory for the Elmira rookies as a tandem and the first since beating Oswego State's Jill Burns and Erin Vargo on September 10.

Already ahead 2-1 following doubles play, the Hawks sealed the E8 matchup by taking the top four singles matches. Heidi Rice was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles over Megan Fitzgerald '18, who was unable to add to her program-record win total on Friday afternoon. At second singles, Johnson was topped by Kelly by a 6-2, 6-0 score. Emily Green '18 and Sarah Hill '19 were also defeated in straight sets at third and fourth singles, respectively.

Katy Jewett '21 improved to 2-1 on the season in singles action by knocking off Brennan 7-5, 6-0, at fifth singles. Brown was EC's other singles winner, as she also secured the second singles victory of her freshman campaign. After going up with a 6-2 first-set win over Zoe Rockwell, the Hartwick senior edged the EC rookie 7-6 (6) in the second set. However, Brown battled to a 10-2 win in the third-set tiebreaker, her first third-set win in three tries this season.
