ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Elmira College women's basketball team dropped its opening contest of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament on Friday evening, falling to tournament host, Marymount University, by a final score of 65-47.

Despite another 17-point outing from senior point guard Lindsey Heaton '19, the Soaring Eagles struggled to keep pace with the Saints' well-rounded attack, as a trio of Marymount players finished in double-figures. Turnovers plagued the Purple and Gold, as the Saints forced EC into 26 miscues, which resulted in 16 points for the hosts. Marymount found success down-low against the Soaring Eagles, as the Saints amassed 42 points in the point compared to just 16 for EC.

The Purple and Gold played the Saints tightly in the opening quarter, but after a jump shot from Lauren Franklin '20 put EC up 11-9, the Saints roared back with an 8-0 run to close the quarter with a 17-11 lead.  The Soaring Eagles buckled down on the defensive end in the second quarter, holding the Saints to 11 points during the period. After slipping behind 22-16, a layup from Sarah Garner '20 cut the deficit to 22-18. Bridget Yaw '20 forced a turnover that led to a Sally Hogan '19 jumper to pull EC within three at 23-20.  The Saints held the Purple and Gold scoreless for the remaining 4:34 of the quarter, as Marymount carried a 28-20 lead into the halftime break.

Trailing 32-22 in the third quarter, EC used two-straight baskets from first-year talent Alyssa Waters '22 to answer the Saints, cutting the deficit to 34-27.  It was all Marymount for the remainder of the quarter until Heaton dropped in a layup with 10 seconds on the clock. EC played Marymount tight in the fourth quarter, going blow-for-blow with the Saints, scoring a game-high 15 points in the period. However, the barrage was too little, too late for EC, as Marymount took the contest by a final score of 65-47.
