ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's tennis team kicks off the 2018 campaign with a midweek match against SUNY Oneonta on Wednesday, February 14, at the Murray Athletic Center. The Soaring Eagles and Red Dragons are scheduled to take flight at 4:00 p.m.
RECORD HOLDERS
A key theme in 2018 will be whether seniors
Yaniv Kogan '18 and
Patrick Tracey '18 are able to ascend further up Elmira's all-time wins leaderboard. Coming into the new season, the pair ranks fourth and fifth in all-time victories, as Kogan has 49 in his career and Tracey is not far behind with 48. Both players hold the special distinction of being in a four-way tie for the most single-season wins by an Elmira player with 21. If they are able to match that feat again this season that would give both more than enough victories to set a new wins record. Both Kogan and Tracey also stand realistic chances of climbing up EC's singles and doubles career wins leaderboards.
SERIES HISTORY
The all-time series between these two aerial foes has featured just eight previous encounters. Oneonta has won all eight of those bouts, which includes last season's 8-1 victory over the Purple and Gold on February 16, 2017, at the Murray Athletic Center.
SCOUTING ONEONTA
The Red Dragons come into today's contest with a 1-0 record after defeating Baruch, 7-2, to open the season on Friday, September 29. Including last season, Oneonta has won its last four matches. In 2017, the Red Dragons posted a 9-12 overall record. Leading the core group of returners is junior Joseph D'Orazio, who paced the team with 21 totals wins a year ago. D'Orazio will see an expanded role this season after the graduation of the team's No. 1 singles player, Michael Nelson. Sophomore Marco Ammirati will also see added responsibility. As a rookie, the 6-foot-2-inch Huntington, New York, native played just doubles for a majority of the season, amassing a team-high 13 doubles wins on the year.
UP NEXT
The Soaring Eagles will remain at the Murray Athletic Center for their second match of the season against Oswego State on Saturday, March 3. The Soaring Eagles and Lakers are slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.
