ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College baseball team will end its season-opening southern road trip with a pair of games in the Tar Heel State, as the Soaring Eagles visit the Falcons of Pfeiffer University on Thursday, February 22, and the Quakers of Guilford College on Friday, February 23.

LAST TIME OUT
The Purple and Gold were swept in a doubleheader in Montgomery, Alabama, against the Huntingdon College Hawks on Tuesday. The Hawks pounded out 15 runs on 19 hits in a lopsided 15-3 victory in the opening game. Although Huntingdon opened the nightcap with a sizable lead, Elmira took advantage of some defensive miscues to make things interesting, but ultimately fell short by an 11-8 final score. Dennis Rudolph '18 produced two hits in each contest and scored a combined three runs. Sam Plaugher '20 performed well in the late game, as he tied a career-high with two hits in addition to two runs and two RBIs.

BAWIEC ON BASE
Senior utility man Conor Bawiec '18 possesses an uncanny ability to get on base, a skill he has displayed once again in the first three games of 2018. Bawiec has recorded a hit in every game so far this season, which extended his active on-base streak that he carried over from his junior season. The Lebanon, Pennsylvania, native ended 2017 by reaching safely in 28 consecutive outings and has extended that streak to 31 straight games. He's approaching his program record of 37 in a row, a lengthy streak that spanned his freshman and sophomore seasons.

SCOUTING PFEIFFER
The Falcons of Pfeiffer University, located in Misenheimer, North Carolina, are amidst the transition from NCAA Division II to the Division III ranks. The Hawks have been accepted into the USA South Conference and will begin playing a full-time conference schedule in 2019. Pfeiffer started the season with three consecutive losses but has since won four in a row, most recently defeating Greensboro College 13-8 on February 20. The pitching staff has given up its share of runs (8.48 ERA), but the offense has provided significant pop with a team average of .360. The Falcons have slugged 10 home runs in seven games, four of which were knocked out of the park by senior outfielder Jordan Eckard.

SCOUTING GUILFORD
Guilford has played five games already in 2018, with its only win coming in Game 1 of a doubleheader against William Peace University on Sunday, February 18, by an 8-4 score. However, three of its four losses have come in close games, including a 2-1 loss to the Pacers in the second game of Sunday's twin bill. Like Elmira's Bawiec, the Quakers have relied heavily upon utility player Trevor Denton, a reigning All-South Region Second Teamer. Denton, who has hit at a .350 clip in five games this year, was a doubles machine in his junior campaign with a team-record 20 two-baggers. In one start on the mound this season, the righty lasted 7.0 innings and gave up just one earned run. He looks to be in line for a start against EC on Friday.

SERIES HISTORY
Elmira will be facing both Pfeiffer and Guilford for the first-time ever this week.

LOOKING AHEAD
Elmira's doubleheader against Wilkes University on Saturday, February 24, has been canceled due to potential rain and unplayable field conditions. The Soaring Eagles will return to action on Saturday, March 10, with a doubleheader against York College (Pa.), beginning at 1:00 p.m.
