ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College baseball team will return to action on Tuesday, April 24, when the Purple and Gold take on the Express of Wells College in a nine-inning game at historic Dunn Field. The first pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
The Soaring Eagles were beaten in a pair of games on the road vs. Houghton College on Saturday, April 21. The Highlanders scored four runs in the first inning of the opener, which proved to be enough to secure a 4-1 win. EC scored five times in the top of the ninth in the nightcap, but Houghton held on for a 15-6 victory. Nick Cottone '19 registered his first-ever complete game in the narrow loss in the first game, as he tossed all 6.0 innings and struck out six.

SCOUTING WELLS
The Express are in their second season of varsity baseball in 2018, after going 13-21 in their debut season. Through 25 games this spring, Wells is slightly below .500 at 11-14, but against North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opponents, the Express are just 1-9. The lone league victory on Wells' schedule came in the opening game of a doubleheader against Cazenovia College on Sunday, April 22, when the Express beat the Wildcats 10-3. Pitcher Zack Kemp earned his team-leading fourth win in that game by tossing 5.0 innings of three-run ball with five strikeouts in his second start. Although he's only 2-5, lefty Brandon Shirley paces the pitching staff with 37 strikeouts. At the plate, catcher Dylan Nolan boasts team highs in both batting average (.354) and slugging percentage (.610). Of his 29 hits, 15 have gone for extra bases, including 11 doubles.

SERIES HISTORY
The Soaring Eagles and Express have met just three times prior to today's contest. All three bouts happened last season, Wells' first as a varsity program. After dropping the first bout by a 3-0 final score, Elmira got revenge by winning the final two games to take the season series, 2-1. The most recent meeting between the two teams was a tightly-contested 3-2 EC victory on April 5, 2017, at historic Dunn Field.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Soaring Eagles continue their busy week of play with a twin bill against non-conference foe Medaille College tomorrow afternoon. The opening contest of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. at Dunn Field.
