Baseball Comes up One Run Short in Comeback Against Keuka

The Elmira College baseball team was on the cusp of pulling off an exciting comeback over Keuka College today, but the Soaring Eagles came up just short in an 11-10 road setback. The Soaring Eagles plated four runs in the top of the ninth inning to almost tie the score.

The Purple and Gold were led in the contest by a stellar performance from sophomore Jansen Crossley '20. The infielder went 1-for-4 from the plate with his first career home run, a three-run shot in the top of the first inning. The long ball gave the Soaring Eagles an early 4-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the first and second innings, Keuka took a lead of its own by scoring five runs in the first and two in the second to go ahead 7-4. The Wolves put 10 runners on base in the two frames to fuel the offensive explosion.

Both teams scored runs in the third inning, as Elmira plated one and Keuka scored two. Eddie O'Donnell IV '18 drove in EC's run with a two-out RBI single through the right side of the infield.

The Soaring Eagles added one more run with a Harrison Zambarano '19 RBI single in the fifth. Keuka answered with by scoring a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to go ahead by a score of 11-6.

After scoreless seventh and eighth frames, Elmira headed into the ninth trailing 11-6. This is when the comeback began, as Tommy Fogarty '20 kicked off the push with a two-run single to through the right side of the infield that plated Conor Bawiec '18 and Jack Volpe '20. Freshman Mark Ryan '21 continued the surge with a two-out single that brought Joey Florio '20 and Cameron Heggie '18 home to cut the deficit to just one, 11-10. Unfortunately for EC, its next batter popped up to seal the non-conference loss.

Rookie Taber Carter '21 made the start and lasted 2.0 innings after allowing seven runs (five earned). Joe Kidd '18 came in and pitched 2.1 innings of relief, allowing just one run and struck out three batters.
