ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College baseball team has added one final home doubleheader to the schedule for the spring season. The Soaring Eagles will host Medaille College at historic Dunn Field on Saturday, May 5, beginning at 1:00 p.m. to conclude play in 2018.
LAST TIME OUT
The Purple and Gold ended Empire 8 Conference action on Thursday, May 3, with a 12-0 setback against E8 Tournament-bound Ithaca College.
Dennis Rudolph '18 and
Bryce Plante '18 each produced two hits for the Soaring Eagles, but the Elmira offense was stunted by several untimely double plays. Of the four pitchers who appeared against the Bombers, second-year fireballer
Garinder Singh Sarana '20 was the only not to allow a run, as he tossed a scoreless eighth inning with one strikeout.
DENNIS THE MENACE
As a senior, center fielder
Dennis Rudolph '18 has consistently been Elmira's best player and is set to cap off his career with his best statistical season. Rudolph is batting a career-best .365 heading into the weekend. He also paces the Purple and Gold in hits (46), triples (3), and stolen bases (18), with the latter two figures also representing career bests.
WELCOME TO THE JAM
Freshman
Mason Weir '21, who played for the EC men's basketball team in the winter, made his second appearance on the mound on May 2 against Penn College. Weir tossed a scoreless inning to preserve his unblemished 0.00 ERA. In 1.1 total innings of work, the rookie right-hander has one strikeout and has surrendered just two hits.
SERIES HISTORY
Elmira leads the all-time series against Medaille 4-2 after sweeping both non-conference games on the road last season. In 2017, EC outscored the Mavericks by a combined 20-4 score.
SCOUTING MEDAILLE
The Mavericks enter the weekend as losers of six of their last seven games, including a pair of one-run losses against Hilbert College last time out on May 1. The lone win in that span was a 10-5 victory over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) foe, Mount Aloysius College, as part of a doubleheader split on April 30. The Mavs have found more success at the plate than on the mound, as the team boasts a cumulative batting average of .297, but ranks near the bottom of the AMCC with an 8.16 ERA. Five starters at batting above .300, led by sophomore left fielder Greg Power. In 28 games, Power is slashing .383/.450/.532 with a team-leading 12 doubles. Jared McStine has proven valuable at the dish and as a pitcher, as he leads the team in hits (37) and earned-run average (4.70). The senior utility man has tossed back-to-back complete games, earning Medaille's last two wins over Alfred State and Mount Aloysius in those appearances.
