Men’s Soccer Maintains Good Form with 1-0 Blanking of Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- A second-half strike from second-year talent Gavin Wise '22 propelled the Elmira College men's soccer team to a 1-0 clean-sheet victory on the road against Pennsylvania College of Technology. With the win, the Soaring Eagles improved to 9-3-2 on the year, while the Wildcats dropped to 1-11-2.

Elmira's defense proved to be up to the challenge once again on a rainy Tuesday night in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, as the Soaring Eagles produced their third consecutive clean sheet. The Wildcats outshot Elmira, 14-11, but the Soaring Eagles placed more shots on goal, 4-3. Corner-kick chances finished in favor of Penn College at 10-8, however, Elmira made the most of its chances by scoring on its eighth and final corner of the game.

Wise, a native of Elmira, New York, scored tonight's game-winning goal in the 56th minute off of a perfectly placed feed on a corner kick from junior standout Jake Meyer '21. Wise, who has only seen the pitch twice this season due to injury, scored his first collegiate goal for the Purple and Gold. Meyer, on the other hand, produced his fourth assist of the season and extended his point streak to five consecutive games.

Defensively, Elmira had a mini scare in the 29th minute, as a shot by Greg Conkle rattled off of the post. Aside from Conkle's close call, the Soaring Eagle back line held steady throughout the game and limited Penn College's scoring chances.

EC's starting netminder, Xavier Townsend '23, made a pair of saves to collect his sixth clean sheet of the season and improve to 8-2-1 on the year.

In His Own Words
Head Coach Kevin Brenner shares his thoughts on Elmira's performance…
"It was a tough road battle tonight but we found a way to win. Penn College is very good despite their record. We will reset the body and mind, and go again on Saturday at Hartwick."
