Baseball Concludes Empire 8 Series vs. Stevens on Sunday

Records: Elmira (2-10, 0-3 E8), Stevens (6-9, 3-0 E8)
Location: Dobbelaar Baseball Field at the DeBaun Athletic Complex -- Hoboken, N.J.

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The Elmira College baseball team was held to a single run in the Empire 8 Conference series finale against Stevens Institute of Technology, as the Ducks downed the Soaring Eagles 10-1 to complete the three-game sweep at Dobbelaar Baseball Field at the DeBaun Athletic Complex

Stevens scored a combined five runs in the first two innings to quickly take a comfortable lead. After the Ducks loaded the bases, EC third baseman Joey Florio '20 was able to throw out leadoff batter Tommy Baronner at home with a great defensive play, but a wild pitch in the next at-bat allowed A.J. Falconite to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Elmira nearly escaped the bases-loaded jam with just the single run allowed, as Angus Adams '22 fanned Patrick Rood for the second out and got the ground ball he needed for the final out, but an infield error scored two unearned runs, as Stevens widened the gap to 3-0.

Adams, who led all EC pitchers with three strikeouts on Sunday, was relieved after giving up two more runs in the bottom of the second. Second-year righty Taber Carter '21 then entered out of the bullpen and compiled not only one of the best outings by a Soaring Eagle on the mound over the weekend, but the best of his young collegiate career. The Hannibal, New York, native completed 4.0 innings of hitless ball with one walk and two strikeouts on 40 pitches.

Unfortunately for the Purple and Gold, the Ducks posted a five-spot in the bottom of the seventh after Carter exited the contest.

The lone run for the Soaring Eagles came in the top of the ninth. Back-to-back base hits by Mason Ryan '22 and Tommy Fogarty '20 spoiled Stevens' shutout. With two away, Harrison Zambarano '19 singled, followed by walks to Jourdan Plaisted '21 and Sam Plaugher '20. However, it was too little, too late, as EC stranded the bases loaded to end the game.

Junior Chandler Brierley earned the win, his first of 2019, as the 6-foot-7-inch left-hander logged 7.0 innings with two hits, one walk, and 12 strikeouts.
