Donnelly, Crossley Each Homer in Baseball's Loss at Wells

AURORA, N.Y. -- Jack Donnelly '19 and Jansen Crossley '20 each belted their first home runs of the 2019 spring season, but the Elmira College baseball team fell in Tuesday's non-conference bout against Wells College by a 14-8 final score.

Donnelly's homer, the first of his EC career, came in a four-run top of the fourth. Following an RBI double off the bat of Harrison Zambarano '19 and a Crossley run-scoring single, the senior catcher from Cooperstown, New York, left the yard with a two-run bomb that tied the score at 4-all.

Hits continued to come in the bottom of the inning, this time for the Express, who took the lead for good with a seven-spot. Wells recorded seven runs on five hits - which included a two-run long ball for catcher Dylan Nolan - three walks and one Elmira error.

Declan Driscoll '22 entered out of the bullpen to halt the big inning, working around a base hit to get the three outs needed. He was one of three relievers who combined to hold the Express off of the scoreboard for three consecutive innings in the fifth, sixth and seventh, as the first-year lefty finished with 2.0 scoreless innings. He was followed by shutout innings from Kyle Tubbs '22 and Garinder Singh Sarana '20.

Trailing 11-4, Crossley brought the Soaring Eagles within five runs of Wells in the seventh. After Mark Ryan '21 was issued a four-pitch walk, the junior from Vancouver, British Columbia, slugged a two-run jack over the wall in center field. EC threatened with two two-out walks after the home run, but a ground ball out helped Wells escape further damage.

Elmira put up two more runs in the ninth, but the Express padded their lead with three of their own in the bottom of the eighth for added insurance.
