Women's Basketball Falls to Alfred in E8 Battle

ALFRED, N.Y. -- A slow start haunted the Elmira College women's basketball team on Friday evening, as the Soaring Eagles were unable to complete the season sweep of Empire 8 Conference foe Alfred University after downing the Saxons in Speidel Gymnasium earlier this year.

Alfred (6-16, 2-10 E8), capitalized on EC's cold-shooting start with a heavy-handed approach in the paint. The Saxons scored 34 points down low, while Elmira posted 14 points against Alfred's stiff defense around the rim. A quartet of Saxons finished in double figures, led by Gillian Flint and the reigning Empire 8 Rookie of the Week Ana Ion, who tallied 14 points apiece.

Elmira (4-17, 2-10 E8) attempted to claw back through the senior duo of Bridget Yaw '20 and Lauren Franklin '20, who finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Yaw did almost all of her damage from behind the 3-point arc, as she went 4-for-6 (66.7%) from deep. Both finished with three assists, while Franklin added seven boards to round out her contributions.

Emily Breheny '20 was EC's answer to the Saxons in the paint, as the senior grabbed a game-high-tying 12 rebounds and seven points. The Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, native also chipped in with a pair of blocks.

Alyssa Waters '22 added six points and seven rebounds, while Taylor Albrecht '22 provided a spark off of the bench with five points and seven boards in 12 minutes of action.
