Soaring Eagles Drop Five Set Thriller on Tuesday Evening

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College Women's Volleyball team dropped a tightly-contested contest on Tuesday evening inside Speidel Gymnasium. After four sets where neither team scored below 21 points, the fifth was no different with the Saxons taking a 15-12 victory to secure the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Soaring Eagles & Saxons continually played back-and-forth, with each of the first three sets ending in a 25-22 score, twice in favor of Elmira.

Leading 2-1, the Soaring Eagles found themselves down early in the fourth set before rattling off six straight with Amelia Martin '24 at the service position. Martin was one of the top offensive leaders for Elmira, tallying nine kills and three service aces while adding 14 digs on the defensive end.

Trailing 6-2, the Saxons rattled off eight of next nine points and three of the last four to even the match at 2-2 behind a 25-21 fourth set victory.

In the fifth, the set remained tied at 4-4 before EC went for three straight, taking a 7-5 advantage. The tide began to turn with the Purple & Gold leading 10-8, as the Saxons scored five of the next six before putting the match away on a Soaring Eagle attack error.

Maddie Boucher '24 led the way with 14 kills while Maddie Hampton '24, Asia Curkendall '25, and Martin each added double-digit digs on the defensive end. In the match, Calli Vocke '23 set a career-high with six blocks, while Kaylene Sauschuck '22 (5) and Curkendall (3) each added to the ledger.

UP NEXT:
The Soaring Eagles are back in action on Friday when they travel to Oneonta for a matchup with Hartwick. Match time is set for 6:00 PM against the Hawks before the Soaring Eagles return home for Senior Day on Saturday against Sage.
