Women's Volleyball Drops Season Opener to Rochester on Wednesday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's volleyball dropped their season-opener to the University of Rochester on Wednesday evening, falling 3-0. The Yellowjacket attack helped jolt Rochester to victory, as the team hit .371% on the day compared to -.038 for Elmira. The Soaring Eagles were led by Sam Sprague '22 on the offensive end, as she finished with six kills in the day. Maddie Boucher '24 and newcomer Samantha Garry '25 each added four kills apiece for Elmira, while Amelia Martin '23 added eight digs on the defensive end.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first set played back-and-forth for both teams early on. After the Yellowjackets jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, Elmira pushed for five straight to regain the lead at 6-3 aided by three straight service aces from Maddie Hampton '24. Rochester was able to bounce back, taking seven of the next eight points to regain their lead at 10-7 in the opening set. After taking advantage of two Rochester miscues, Elmira was able to pull within one (10-9) before U of R put the set away. The Yellowjackets took advantage of three aces over their final six-point run in the first set to gain an early 1-0 advantage. 
  
 After taking the final six points in the first, Rochester was able to score eight consecutive points to begin the second set which led head coach Daniel Miranda to call a timeout. After Sprague got the Soaring Eagles on the board with a kill, Elmira was able to regain momentum, pulling the set within three points at 14-11. Rochester scored five of the final seven points in the set to win 25-18 and gain a 2-0 advantage in the match. 
  
 After starting the third set with a 3-1 advantage, Rochester used an 11-2 run to regain control of the set at 12-5. Twelve attacking errors on the Elmira end in the final set aided the Yellowjackets to victory, winning the final set 25-13. 
 
UP NEXT:
Elmira returns to action on Friday, September 3, for their 2021 home opener at Speidel Gymnasium against Keystone College. First serve is set for 6:00 PM.
