Weekend Roundup: Women’s Volleyball Competes in Oswego Invitational

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's volleyball team finished the weekend with a 1-3 showing at the Oswego State Invitational, picking up a win against SUNY Canton in straight sets on Saturday afternoon.

vs. SUNY Potsdam (L, 1-3 – Day One)

After taking the opening set 25-19, the Soaring Eagles suffered a setback, with the Bears taking the next three sets to take the match 3-1. The second set showed to be the closest of the remaining three, but Potsdam pulled away with a 25-22 victory to even the slate.

Samantha Garry '25 and Maddie Boucher '24 led the way on the offense end for Elmira, each recording seven kills in the match while Kaylene Sauschuck '22 and Amelia Martin '23 each added six of their own. Cassidy Ryan '24 nearly doubled her previous career-high in assists, coming away with 32 in the match.

Maddie Hampton '24 and Martin produced the majority of the defensive efficiency for EC, as the pair combined for 24 digs in the match.

vs. Oswego State (L, 1-3 – Day One)

Similar to the Potsdam match, Elmira would come out strong to open the nightcap, taking the first set against the Lakers, 25-22.

Oswego State came out and won the second set in convincing fashion, 25-12, to even the match. The Soaring Eagles would play hard-fought third and fourth sets, but dropped each as the Lakers went on to win the match.

Sauschuck led the way for the Soaring Eagles with seven kills, while Sam Sprague '22 and Garry each added six.

Ryan tallied 20 assists in the match while Hampton recorded a season-high 18 digs in the loss.

vs. SUNY Canton (W, 3-0 – Day Two)

The Soaring Eagles faced their biggest challenge of the match in the opening set, as 25 points wasn't enough for either team to clinch. Elmira and the 'Roos would battle back-and-forth, but it was EC who would take the opener 26-24.

Elmira was able to take the positive momentum from the first set and cruise to easier second and third set wins, taking each by a score of 25-16 to take the match 3-0.

Ava Wallingford '25, Makenna Clark '25, and Sprague led the way with four kills apiece, with Sprague also adding four service aces. Cami Witchley '25 notched a career-best in her young career with 18 assists, leading the category for the Soaring Eagles in the match.

vs. St. Lawrence (L, 0-3 – Day Two)

The Saints used seven service aces and 35 kills on their way to a straight-sets victory over the Soaring Eagles in the tournament finale on Saturday. After taking the first two sets 25-15, the Saint faced a stronger showing from the Soaring Eagles, but came out with a 25-22 third-set victory.

Elmira was led by Sprague (6), Wallingford (5), and Garry (4) in kills, while Sauschuck recorded four blocks.
