MARCY, N.Y. – A pair of 3-0 victories highlighted the opening day of the SUNY Poly Invitational for the Elmira College Men's Volleyball program on Friday afternoon. The Soaring Eagles opened the day with a sweep of Wells College before finishing the day with a sweep against SUNY Poly. The Purple & Gold improved to 4-0 on the season with the victories.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Soaring Eagles opened the match against the Express with a pair of blocks from
Oscar Muñoz Trinidad '23 and
Edwin Sosa '25 to take a 2-0 lead.
Alberto Mauricio '25 added to the lead for EC later in the set with back-to-back kills that would make it 7-3. Leading the first set 8-6, Elmira used a 5-0 run to increase its advantage to 13-6. The Soaring Eagles closed the set with consecutive kills from
Jordan Peiser '24 and
Eric Jackson '23 to secure the 25-20 victory.
The second set would be tightly contested early as Elmira would lead by two points until taking a 17-11 lead after a kill from
Matt Amoddio '22. The Soaring Eagles would take advantage of some errors late in the set by the Express and take a 2-0 lead in the match as a service error secured the 25-16 victory for the Purple & Gold.
Early blocks provided momentum in the third set for Elmira as Peiser and Amoddio pushed the lead to 4-1, while a triple block from Jackson, Amoddio, and Peiser made it 6-1. Wells made a run to trim the deficit in the set to 8-7 before the Soaring Eagles responded with a 5-0 run to make it 13-7. Back-to-back blocks from
Neiram Galán-Canales '23, Sosa, and
Ryan Mattes '23 extended the lead to 24-13 before a kill by Sosa secured the 25-14 victory and the 3-0 sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Elmira would surrender the opening point of the match against SUNY Poly before answering with a 3-0 run to gain momentum. Service errors hindered any further momentum early in the set as the Soaring Eagles held a one-point cushion until a block by Amoddio and Jackson made it 11-8.
Leading 12-9 in the set, the Purple & Gold would go on a 6-0 run to take a 17-9 advantage. Peiser tallied a pair of kills along with a solo block during the run for Elmira. Another 6-0 run helped to secure the victory in the opening set for EC as an ace from Mauricio secured the 25-13 decision.
SUNY Poly controlled the second set from the first serve as three aces through the first four points pushed the Wildcats out to a 4-0 lead. Trailing 14-9 in the set, Elmira started to make a charge and would eventually gain the lead thanks to a 9-0 run.
A kill from Jackson knotted the score 14-14, while an ace from Peiser gave the Purple & Gold a 17-14 advantage. The lead would hold until the Wildcats knotted the score 23-23 as they forced a timeout to be called by the Soaring Eagles. The timeout would work in Elmira's favor as Munoz Trinidad delivered consecutive kills to secure the 25-23 victory.
The Soaring Eagles would lead from start to finish in the third set despite SUNY Poly trimming the deficit to a single point on several occasions. Elmira notched 10 kills as a team in the set en route to securing a 25-20 victory after back-to-back kills from Amoddio and Peiser.
