Women's Volleyball Takes Pair of Matches on Saturday over SUNY Cobleskill and Potsdam

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College women's volleyball team took home a pair of wins on Saturday in its home invitational, defeating the Fighting Tigers from SUNY Cobleskill in straight sets to begin the day, before defeating SUNY Potsdam 3-1 in the finale. 

In the opener, Morgan Richardson '25 paved the way with 11 kills for the Soaring Eagles, while Asia Curkendall '25 added 25 set assists. In the second, Maddie Boucher '23 and Makenna Clark '25 recorded 13 and 12 kills, respectively, while Curkendall added 34 assists. In the second match against the Bears, Gabriela Rodriguez '26 recorded 21 digs after eight against the Fighting Tigers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Soaring Eagles would score the first seven, and 10 of the first 11 points in the match against the Fighting Tigers. The dominant opening set would continue, as Elmira took the frame 25-10 while holding Cobleskill to just one kill, and a -.409 hitting percentage.
  • In the second and third, Elmira would be tasked with stronger play from the Fighting Tigers, despite Elmira taking both sets 25-22. In the second, EC would find itself down 6-2 before a 13-1 run gave the Soaring Eagles an eight point lead. From there, the Tigers would fight and eventually take a 22-21 lead in the frame before Elmira scored four consecutive points to take the frame with Boucher at the service position. 
  • In the final frame, the set would see eight ties and four lead changes, but Elmira capped the morning sweep of the Tigers by scoring nine of the final 11 points, finishing it off with a kill from Richardson. 
  • For the match, the Soaring Eagles hit .160 compared to -.127 for the Fighting Tigers, while combining for 32 kills compared to 14 for the opposition.
  • In the second match against SUNY Potsdam, the first three sets would all be decided by a 25-17 margin, with sets one and three going to the Soaring Eagles. In the match, Elmira outhit the Bears .176 to .092, and would score 15 of the final 18 points in the opening set to hold the lead early. 
  • After the Bears took the second set, it would be Elmira, who would take sets three and four to take two victories on the day. 

 UP NEXT: 
The Purple & Gold return to the floor on Tuesday when taking a trip to SUNY Delhi to square off against the Broncos. First serve is set for 6:00 PM before beginning conference play against Nazareth on Friday evening.
