ELMIRA, N.Y. – Elmira women's basketball took on the Golden Flyers of Nazareth University on Friday afternoon in its first game of 2024. After keeping the game close in the first quarter, the deficit continued to grow from that point forward, and the Soaring Eagles fell by a final of 80-55.

Nevaeh Winston '25 led Elmira in scoring with 14 points, along with four rebounds and three blocks. Laura Bogota '25 and Alleney Klunk '24 also finished the afternoon with double-digit points with 13 and 10, respectively.

JUST THE BASICS:
SCORE: Elmira 55, Nazareth 80
LOCATION: Elmira, New York | Speidel Gymnasium
TEAM RECORDS: Elmira (6-3, 1-1 E8), Nazareth (11-1, 3-0 E8)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Soaring Eagles kept the deficit within two scores throughout the first quarter, including taking the lead out of the gate thanks to two Winston free throws. Nazareth scored nine of the following 11 points to take a 9-4 lead before a made jump shot and a three-pointer by Bogota tied the game with 5:15 left in the first. The Golden Flyers scored six unanswered points after EC tied the game, but a pair of threes by Mia Welty '26 and Taylor Jung '25 sent Elmira into the break trailing by 21-19.
  • Nazareth began the second on a 14-2 run over the first seven minutes before a pair of Bogota jump shots helped Elmira find its footing offensively. However, the Soaring Eagles could not significantly cut into Nazareth's lead and entered halftime trailing 40-29.
  • The third quarter began similarly to the second, with Nazareth opening the period on a 10-2 run. Winston followed that run with three straight baskets in the paint for the Purple & Gold. However, after that point, Elmira could not continue its offensive momentum and entered the final quarter down 62-41.
  • EC tallied six made baskets in the final quarter, its most since the first quarter. However, it was not enough, as the game ended in an 80-55 defeat.
  • The Soaring Eagles began the game shooting 3-7 from beyond the arc in the first quarter but did not hit another three-pointer for the rest of the game and finished 3-16 from distance.
