Elmira Unable to Overcome Slow Start in Loss to Hartwick

ELMIRA, N.Y. – Elmira College women's basketball returned home for its final weekend of regular season basketball inside Speidel Gymnasium. After only managing two points in the second quarter, the Soaring Eagles found themselves in an insurmountable deficit, and despite outscoring the Hawks 36-28 in the final two quarters, they still fell in a 75-51 defeat.

Nevaeh Winston '25 and Laura Bogota '25 accounted for most of the Soaring Eagles' offense, scoring 18 and 15 points, respectively.

JUST THE BASICS:
SCORE: Elmira 51, Hartwick 75
LOCATION: Elmira, New York | Speidel Gymnasium
TEAM RECORDS: Elmira (9-11, 4-9 E8), Hartwick (11-12, 7-7 E8)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Bogota got Elmira on the board with a jump shot 2:37 into the game after Elmira gave up the first five points to Hartwick. Both teams then traded free throws for their following points, with Winston knocking down both of hers to make it a 7-4 game. From that point, the Hawks went on a 9-2 run, giving them a 10-point lead before Winston and Bogota scored on consecutive possessions. Elmira got another free throw from Winston and a Bogota jump shot to end the quarter but trailed 10-13 after one.
  • Hartwick scored the first four points of the second quarter before a pair of Bogota free throws made it with 2:48 gone in the frame. However, those would be the only points the Soaring Eagles scored in the second, being held scoreless for the remaining seven minutes of the half, giving up 23 unanswered points to close out the quarter. EC trailed 47-15 entering the break. Winston and Bogota were the only players who scored for the Soaring Eagles in the first two quarters.
  • The Soaring Eagles began the third quarter with four Bogota free throws and a Winston layup, giving Elmira a 6-0 run. Elmira got its first points from someone other than Winston and Bogota when Victoria Rought '25 sank a layup with 5:43 left in the third, bringing the score to 54-23. Elmira scored on the next possession when Bogota drained a pair of free throws. Winston and D'Asia Jones '25 also got on the scoreboard, making it a 64-31 game at the end of three.
  • Winston began the fourth with consecutive layups, the second of which ended in a three-point play. Later in the quarter, Rought hit two straight layups, making it a 70-42 contest. Neither team scored for two minutes after that point, with Bogota breaking the drought with a free throw at the 5:54 minute mark. Anna Ward '25 got on the scoresheet with a pair of jump shots. However, Elmira could not overcome the deficit, and the game ended in a 24-point defeat.
