Soaring Eagles Give Up 10 Runs in Loss to Ithaca

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Elmira College baseball team dropped its matchup against Ithaca on Tuesday afternoon, falling 10-1 in a neutral site matchup at Cortland.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Ithaca struck first, plating its first run in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly. The Bombers got two more on an RBI base hit and a solo home run in the following frame, giving them a 3-0 advantage.
  • Elmira got on the board in the top of the third inning when Nathan Ofalt '26 drove in Erik Charnetski '24 on an RBI single to left field. However, the following two batters struck out looking with the bases loaded, giving EC just one run in the inning.
  • Neither team scored in the following two innings until Ithaca broke through in the bottom of the fifth, plating three to bring the score to 6-1. After a 1-2-3 inning for Elmira in the top of the sixth, the Bombers scored another on a sacrifice fly.
  • The Soaring Eagles tried to get something going in the seventh when Brett Warden '25 and Matteo Salvati '25 both singled to right, putting runners on first and second with one out. However, Elmira grounded into a double play to end the inning.
  • Ithaca notched three more runs in the bottom half of the seventh to bring the score to 10-1.
  • The following two innings saw the Soaring Eagles go scoreless to close out the game, and they dropped the decision to Ithaca, 10-1.
  • Charnetski and Warden both had multi-hit outings, while Salvati worked a pair of walks during the game.
  • Nicholas Miller '26 got the start for the Purple & Gold, tossing two innings and giving up three runs (two earned). Xander Canfield '26 came in in relief of Miller and pitched three innings of three-run ball while striking out two.

The Soaring Eagles are scheduled to take on the Warriors of Lycoming College on Saturday, March 9, with first pitch set for 2:30 p.m.
