Soaring Eagles Defeat Marywood in Saturday Afternoon Tri-Match Inside Speidel Gymnasium

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College women's volleyball program split its Saturday afternoon tri-match inside Speidel Gymnasium, defeating Marywood in dominant fashion to begin the day before falling to the Cougars to end the afternoon. In game one, Madi Conti '28, Asia Curkendall '25, and Morgan Richardson '25 led the way offensively with six kills a piece, while Curkendall also chipped in ten set assists. Defensively, Cassara Jones '27 finished the match with four block assists, and a solo block while Gabriella Rodriguez '26 notched ten digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED (ELMIRA vs. MARYWOOD):

  • The match would see the Pacers take an early 11-9 lead following a service ace from Emilie Agnoli, before Elmira used a 10-0 run with Curkendall at the service position to regain the lead at 19-10. After some back-and-forth play, EC would score two of the final three points on a pair of Marywood attacking errors and a kill from Richardson to take the set 25-15. 
  • In the second set, EC would hit .227% as a team, notching 11 kills in the frame. In the second, Curkendall would record five kills to lead the way, while using a 6-2 run to begin the set to gain the early advantage. Leading by as many as seven points nearing the midway point, Elmira would see the Pacers use a steady attack to eventually take a 24-23 lead. From there, an attacking error from Marywood and a kill from Richardson would regive EC the advantage (25-24), and it was eventually put away with a kill from Curkendall and a service ace from Morgan Sica '28 to put EC ahead 2-0 in the match following the 27-25 victory. 
  • The third set would prove to be Elmira's largest set victory of the day, as the team hit .304% on nine kills with just a pair of errors. The 25-12 victory was sparked by a 5-0 run to begin the frame,  including another 10-0 run with Sica at the service position, three of which were service aces. 
  • The set and eventual match was wrapped up by a 5-0 run, as a kill from Makenna Clark '24, a pair of service aces from Rodriguez, and a pair of attacking errors from the Pacers sent EC away with a straight-sets victory. 
  • As a team, Elmira would hit .229% from the floor compared to .000 for the Pacers. 
HOW IT HAPPENED (ELMIRA vs. MISERICORDIA):
  • The Cougars would control the majority of the match, seeing 25-13, 25-8, and 25-18 set victories against the Purple & Gold. The Cougars used a powerful second set with a .733 hitting percentage where they tallied 11 kills and zero errors, while finishing the match with 41 kills and 6 errors in total for a .493 mark.
  • For Elmira, Conti (5), Clark (4) and Richardson (3) led the way on the offensive side, while Curkendall paved the way with 13 assists.
