First-Half Lead Not Enough for Soaring Eagles against Brockport in E8 Setback

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College women's basketball team held a lead in the first half before going into the half tied against the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles as the Soaring Eagles would be outscored 45-24 in the second half en route to a 74-53 loss on Friday inside Speidel Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Mallory Welty '26 opened the scoring with back-to-back 3-pointers for Elmira as the Soaring Eagles would take an early 6-2 lead. Emma Ryan '28 would follow later in the quarter with consecutive buckets to give EC a 12-11 lead. Brockport drained a late 3-pointer to take a 14-12 advantage into the second quarter.
  • The Golden Eagles opened the second quarter on a run that would push their lead to 22-12, with 7:49 on the clock. Elmira rallied to trim the deficit to 22-19 following a layup from Nevaeh Winston '25 and another 3-pointer from Welty.
  • Elmira tied the score 27-27 with 2:49 left in the quarter as Laura Bogota '25 connected on a 3-pointer before Winston put EC on top 29-27 with less than two minutes to play. The Golden Eagles hit a pair of free throws with less than a minute to play and would send the game into halftime knotted 29-29.
  • Brockport would go on a run late in the third quarter and extend its lead to 51-41 as the Golden Eagles outscored Elmira 22-12 in the frame.  
  • The Golden Eagles would control the fourth quarter as Brockport pushed its lead to 66-45 with just under four minutes to play. Welty connected on her team-high fifth 3-pointer of the night with 2:20 left to play to trim the deficit to 67-50.
  • Welty paced Elmira with 15 points on the night, while Bogota and Winston both added nine points for the Soaring Eagles. Both teams finished the contest with 44 rebounds and 19 turnovers.
 
UP NEXT: The Soaring Eagles are back in action on Saturday as Elmira hosts SUNY Geneseo in an Empire 8 Conference matchup inside Speidel Gymnasium, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
