Women’s Basketball Starts Strong; Falters in Second Half against Nazareth, 68-46

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Elmira College women's basketball program saw a first-half lead slip away in the second half of action on Friday night as the Soaring Eagles dropped a 68-46 decision on the road against Nazareth in Empire 8 action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Mallory Welty '26 opened the game with a 3-pointer for the Soaring Eagles after taking a pass from Laura Bogota '25. Nevaeh Winston '25 would then go to work for Elmira as she gave the Purple & Gold an 8-3 advantage after going 2-for-2 at the free-throw line.
  • D'Asia Jones '25 connected on a pair of late 3-pointers in the opening quarter to give EC an 18-9 lead before Nazareth recorded a pair of points at the free-throw line to trim the deficit to 18-11.
  • Nazareth rallied early in the second quarter to knot the score 20-20 before the Purple & Gold rattled off eight unanswered points to take a 28-20 lead. The advantage for EC would be cut to 28-25 before Jones drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it 31-25 headed to the half.
  • The Golden Flyer would take control in the third quarter as they chipped away at the deficit before gaining the lead en route to out-scoring Elmira 22-10 in the frame. After shooting over 40 percent from the field in the first half, EC went just 4-of-15 from the field in the third quarter.
  • The fourth quarter would see the same pace of play from Nazareth, who outscored the Soaring Eagles 21-5 down the stretch. The Golden Flyers went 7-of-15 from the field in the third quarter and 7-of-13 in the fourth quarter en route to a 68-46 victory.
  • Jones paced Elmira on the night with 14 points and a career-high four 3-pointers, while Winston added 11 points and eight rebounds. Bogota and Amarionah Dixon '26 both recorded six points in the contest for the Soaring Eagles.
