Soaring Eagles Open E8 Slate with 52-51 Victory at Home against Hartwick

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College women's basketball program rallied from a rough third quarter to secure its first Empire 8 Conference win of the season as the Soaring Eagles defeated the Hartwick College Hawks 52-51 inside Speidel Gymnasium on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Soaring Eagles would trail early in the first quarter but rallied down the stretch as Elmira used a 9-0 run to take a 19-7 lead against the Hawks. Emma Ryan '28 tallied four points to spark the run, while Nevaeh Winston added three points for Elmira.
  • Hartwick closed the opening quarter on a 6-0 run as the Hawks rallied to trim the deficit to 19-13 through the opening 10 minutes of action.
  • Elmira extended its lead to 21-15 in the second quarter following a layup by Sophia Ward '27 before the Hawks would come rallying back with a run to cut the deficit to 21-19. A layup from Winston sparked a 6-0 run to end the quarter as Elmira took a 30-22 lead into the half.
  • Hartwick controlled the third quarter for the majority of the 10 minutes as the Hawks trimmed a 30-22 deficit to 32-31 with 5:11 remaining on the clock. At 5:27, the Hawks took their first lead since the opening quarter.
  • A 3-pointer from Mallory Welty '26 with 1:44 left in the third quarter knotted the score 39-39 for the Soaring Eagles before the Hawks hit a pair of free throws to take a 41-39 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • Elmira gained a 48-45 advantage at the 4:49 mark of the fourth quarter and wouldn't look back following a 3-pointer from Laura Bogota '25. Hartwick trimmed the gap to 50-49 before Taylor Jung '25 connected on a 3-pointer of her own to make it 52-49 with 1:03 remaining.
  • The Hawks closed the gap to 52-51 with less than a minute to play before the Soaring Eagles would come up with a huge steal from Winston as time expired on an inbound play by Hartwick.
