HAMBURG, N.Y. - The Elmira College women's basketball team traveled to face the Hawks of Hilbert College at the Brad Hafner Recreation Center in Hamburg, NY. The Soaring Eagles walked away victorious behind strong performances from Lauren Miller and Mallory Welty.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Both teams were evenly contested from the jump until the Soaring Eagles created a deficit courtesy of a three-pointer and shot in the paint from Haley Mosch. Elmira held a five-point lead halfway through the period before extending it to nine on a jumper from Mallory Welty. A buzzer-beating three-pointer from Hilbert ended the first quarter with Elmira leading 21-15. The Soaring Eagles carried their strong play into the second quarter, with an Amarionah Dixon jumper paired with a fast-break layup to elevate them to a ten-point lead with six minutes left. At the break, the Soaring Eagles held a 36-27 lead over Hilbert.
In the third quarter, the Soaring Eagles exploded offensively for 24 points. After Hilbert scored the opening bucket, Elmira responded quickly with a flurry of their own. With seven minutes left, Elmira extended their lead to 27. A persistent Hawks squad saw them chip at the deficit but was ultimately not enough leaving Elmira to secure the 70-51 victory.
