Women's Volleyball Season Opens at Home with Loss to Moravian on Friday

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College women's volleyball program opened its 2025 season on Friday inside Speidel Gymnasium as the Soaring Eagles fell on the opening day of the Elmira Fall Quad Invitational. EC lost to Moravian University in its season-opening match 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Soaring Eagles got out to an early 4-1 lead after a kill by Gabriella Rustine '26. The Greyhounds rallied to tie the set at 5-5 before Moravian scored the next seven points for a 12-5 edge. The Greyhounds held a 13-9 advantage in scoring the rest of the way to secure a 25-14 victory and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • Moravian had a hot start to the second set by taking a 13-2 lead with EC kills from Morgan Sica '28 and Madalyn Devonshire '29. Another strong finish by the Greyhounds produced 12 of the last 16 points to take a 2-0 match lead.
  • In the third set, Elmira scored four consecutive points to trail 8-7 before the Greyhounds also put together a four-point rally of their own for a 12-8 lead. A pair of attack errors by Moravian kept the set close at 15-10 before another strong Greyhound finish saw Moravian score 10 of the last 13 points to take the match.

The Soaring Eagles return to the court for day two of the Elmira Fall Quad Invitational on Saturday with matches against Oswego State and Bard College beginning at 11:30 A.M. inside Speidel Gymnasium.
