Women’s Volleyball Rallies to Force Fifth Set at Curry

MILTON, MASS. – The Elmira College women's volleyball team fell in both matches on Saturday to the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and host Curry College in Katz Gymnasium. The Soaring Eagles rallied to force a fifth set against Curry in a 3-2 loss and then were defeated by MCLA 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED (ELMIRA vs. CURRY):
  • The Soaring Eagles came out flying in the first set with an 8-0 lead. Ahead 20-13, each team strung together four-consecutive points at 24-17 before Elmira captured five of the final six points to take the first set 25-18.
  • Both the second and third sets had scores of 23-18 late in the sets. In the second set Elmira had the 23-18 edge but Curry took the set 25-23 by getting the final seven points. In the third set, Curry held the 23-18 lead and got two of the last six to win 25-22.
  • In the fourth set EC tied the match at 2-2. With the teams tied at 22 the Soaring Eagles got the last three points to win 25-22 and force a fifth set.
  • The deciding set was all Curry in the early going after the Colonels took a 7-0 lead. Elmira got within a pair of points twice with the final time at 12-10 before Curry scored the final three for a 15-10 set win and 3-2 match victory.
  • Aimee Bridges '29 led Elmira in kills (10), while Gabriela Rodriguez '26 had a team-best 27 digs and Erin Bracken '28 contributed 30 assists.
  • It was the first-ever meeting between the Colonels and Soaring Eagles.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (ELMIRA vs. MCLA):
  • The Soaring Eagles and Trailblazers were tied at 12 in the first set before MCLA finished the set by taking 13 of the last 17 points for a 25-16 set win.
  • Elmira never had the lead in the second set but got within one point at 15-14 before MCLA won 10 of the last 12 points for another 25-16 set win.
  • Trailing 13-5 in the third set, Elmira got seven of the next eight points to trail by two. The Soaring Eagles never got a lead but crawled back to get within one point at 24-23 before falling 25-23.
  • Alyson Hagberg '26 led Elmira in kills with four and assists with five.
