Elmira Falls to Utica in Conference Opener

Elmira, N.Y. – The Elmira women's volleyball team fell to Utica University in a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-14, 25-12) on Wednesday night inside Speidel Gymnasium. The Soaring Eagles battled throughout the match but were unable to overcome the Pioneers' offensive attack.
 
LEADERS
Madalyn Devonshire led Elmira with seven kills while Aimee Bridges added five kills of her own. Morgan Sica recorded six kills, while Olivia Roccabruna contributed 12 assists. Ellora Bynoe delivered three kills, one ace and one assist on the night.
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
EC opened the first set with an early 3-0 advantage after a Devonshire kill, a Utica attack error and an ace from Gabrielle Lewis. The Pioneers responded with two points to cut the deficit to one before Elmira regained ta 6-3 lead following a Bridges kill. Utica continued to battle back, tying the set before taking its first lead at 8-7. The teams continued to exchange points, with kills from Lewis, Devonshire, Bridges and Sica helping EC stay within striking distance. The Soaring Eagles stayed close behind at 17-16 before the Pioneers used a late 8-2 run to pull away. Utica closed the set with a 25-19 victory to take a 1-0 lead.
 
Bynoe opened the second set with a kill which was quickly answered by a Pioneer kill. Utica took a three-point lead off a four-point run before Sica laid down a kill to cut it to two (7-5). The Soaring Eagles continued to fight, with kills from Bynoe and Sica to keep the deficit within reach. Elmira trailed 12-10 before the Pioneers began to pull away, using a 9-2 run to take a 21-12 advantage. Sica threw in a final kill before Utica ultimately closed out the second set 25-14, moving one set away from the match win.
 
Elmira came out strong with a Devonshire kill to open the scoring. Utica responded but Sica answered with a kill to keep the Soaring Eagles with a 3-2 lead. The Pioneers then took control with a six-point rally, building a 9-3 advantage. EC responded with kills from Erin Bracken, Devonshire and Bridges to cut into the deficit, while an error by Utica helped the Soaring Eagles pull within four at 14-10. Utica quickly delivered another six-point run to extend its lead to 20-10. Elmira continued to battle as Bridges contributed another kill, but the Pioneers reached match point at 24-12. Utica closed out the set, securing the 25-12 victory and closing out the match.

 Elmira will look to bounce back as they take on SUNY Poly tomorrow as they honor their senior, game time slotted for 1 PM.
