Utica, NY – EC Women's Tennis earned their first win of the 2010 season this afternoon as they defeated the Pioneers of Utica College in an Empire 8 showdown. Elmira took the contest without dropping a point as they cruised to a 9-0 victory.
The Soaring Eagles started the match with two points in hand as Utica was down on players and had to default the number three doubles and number six singles positions. EC took both doubles points as
Alex Putney '12 (Dundee, NY -- Hammondsport) and
Bri Palmiero '12 (Rochester, NY -- Bishop Kearney) teamed up for an 8-5 win at the first spot while
Clare Lowery '13 (Syracuse, NY -- West Genesee) and
Melanie Walker '13 (Scranton, PA -- Scranton) paired up for an 8-0 sweep at the second position.
In singles action EC was dominant, only giving up 8 games out of the 68 that were played.
Putney claimed her first singles win of the season at the number one spot as she took the match 6-3, 6-1. Fourth year starter
Rebecca Kingman '11 (Hamilton, NJ -- Steinert) won her match at the second position 6-1, 6-2.
Lowery only gave up a game as she routed her opponent 6-0, 6-1 at third singles while
Palmiero and
Walker both posted shutouts at the fourth and fifth positions respectively.
Elmira will look to build on the success they found today as they travel to Pittsford, NY tomorrow to take on the Cardinals of St. John Fisher College in a crucial early season Empire 8 battle.
