Elmira Edged in Field Hockey, 3-1

Pine Valley, NY -- The Elmira College Women's Field Hockey team suffered a hard-fought loss today against the Hawks of Hartwick College by a score of 3-1.  The Soaring Eagles came out playing tough defense, holding the Hawks scoreless on 6 shots for the first 35 minutes.  However, they could not get their offense going as they were only able to get 2 shots off in the period, both of which were saved by Hartwick goalie Mackenzie Chapman '11 (Queensbury, NY -- Niskayuna).

Elmira College came out strong in the second half, having early opportunities to score, but Chapman made two saves to keep the game scoreless.  The stalemate continued until the 48th minute of the contest where Hartwick forward, Jen Kaye '11 (Altamont, NY -- Guilderland), put the ball in the goal off a hard cross from Sarah MacDougall '13 (Watertown, MA -- Watertown).  Five minutes later, Hartwick would score again with a goal from Kelsey Kimble '12 (Dinmans Ferry, PA -- Delaware Valley).

The Soaring Eagles would not back down, however, and finally put one past the goalie.  Elmira would get their first goal of the contest from McKenna Light '14 (Marathon, NY -- Marathon) as she was able to beat the goalie on a one-on-one and blast a shot into the right corner of the goal.  The Soaring Eagles continued to fight back and had their chances late in the game, but the game was put away by the Hawks in the 66th minute when Anna Drake '12 (West Winfield, NY – Mount Markham) scored off a deflection from an Elmira College player.

The goalie play was rather strong for Elmira in today's contest, allowing only 3 goals on 18 shots.  Taylor Youngkrans '14 (Oneida, NY -- Oneida) got the start as she made 8 saves and allowed 2 goals in just over 53 minutes of play.  Lauren Thomas '14 (Marshfield, Ma -- Marshfield) also made an appearance in today's contest, making 2 saves and allowing 1 goal in her 16 minutes of action.

The Soaring Eagles look to record their first win of the season as they travel to Manhattanville College on Tuesday, September 21st at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference game.
