Oneonta, NY -- The EC Women's Tennis team suffered their first loss of the 2010 season as they fell to the Hawks of Hartwick College 8-1. Elmira grabbed one of the three doubles points but failed to earn a point in singles competition.
Earning Elmira's only point of the contest was third doubles duo
Rebecca Kingman '11 (Hamilton, NJ -- Steinert) and first year Soaring Eagle
Emily Marois '14 (Brooklyn, CT -- Woodstock Academy). The doubles tandem earned a hard fought win at the third spot 9-8 (7-4). The pair would take the first two games of the match before dropping six straight. With a bleak outlook, the two players ran off four straight games to notch the score at 6-6. EC would eventually pull ahead in the match 8-7 but Hartwick held serve to force a tie breaker for the match. In the breaker,
Kingman and
Marois would take six of the first seven points before taking the match at 7-4 in the breaker.
In singles action the Hawks proved to be too much as they would sweep the Soaring Eagles, six matches to zero. At first singles,
Alex Putney '12 (Dundee, NY -- Hammondsport) got off to slow start but pushed her opponent in the second set before falling 6-0, 6-4.
Clare Lowery '13 (Syracuse, NY -- West Genesee) got off to a hot start at the third position as she went up 4-1 before dropping the match 6-4, 6-0. At the fourth spot
Bri Palmiero '12 (Rochester, NY -- Bishop Kearney) played a hard fought match, losing 6-2, 7-6 (7-2).
Despite an 8-1 loss the Soaring Eagles showed fight and potential. Look for the Soaring Eagles to bounce back as they host the Bombers of Ithaca College on Wednesday, September 8th at 4:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletics Center in Pine Valley, NY.
