Women’s Tennis Soars Over Hawks

Elmira, NY-- EC Women's Tennis team played another tough conference match today winning against the Hartwick Hawks. Elmira started off strong winning two out of three doubles, then battled in singles to win the match 5-4.

The second doubles duo of Amy Schmidt '15 (Batavia, NY -- Batavia) and Melanie Walker '13 (Scranton, PA -- Scranton) were first to finish winning 8-2. Kayla Fitzgerald '15 (Thomaston, CT -- Thomaston) and Elyse Colby '12 (Owego, NY -- Coronado) dictated third doubles for the 8-4 win. Putting up a tough fight at number one doubles were Alex Putney '12 (Dundee, NY -- Hammondsport) and Bri Palmiero '12 (Rochester, NY -- Bishop Kearney) who lost 8-9 (5-7) in the tiebreaker.

In singles play, Fitzgerald continued her domination winning 6-0, 6-2 at fifth singles putting her at 7-2 on the season. Also showing great improvement on the season was second singles Schmidt who breezed through her match 6-3, 6-4. Putting up the most fight for the team was Co-Captain Palmiero at one singles. Palmiero looked down and out of the match going into the second set, but she fought hard and kept her head cool to win the second set 6-4 then the third set 6-2. Also putting up good fights for the Soaring Eagles were Walker and Micah Moskoff '14 (Somerset, MA -- Somerset).     

 The Women's Tennis team will now look to tomorrow's match against tough conference opponent St. John Fisher Sunday, October 2nd at 1:00 p.m.
