Men’s Basketball Drops Tournament Opener to Allegheny

Rochester, NY – The Elmira College Men's Basketball team dropped its tournament opener to Allegheny College 65-48 Saturday evening at the University of Rochester Tournament. The loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 0-4, while the win improves the Gators to 2-3.

EC struggled in the opening half offensively but managed to drain five three pointers to remain within 11 at 34-23 at intermission. The Gators were on fire from the field as they nailed 63 percent of their shots from the field in the game. The Purple and Gold also got outrebounded 33-21 on the boards, which made it tough to complete a second half comeback.

Matt Newell '14 (Cranston, RI -- St. Andrew's) provided an offensive spark for Elmira as he finished with a game-high 18 points. Newell was accurate in the game, converting on four of his five treys, while shooting 7-for-11 from the field. James Ness and Devone McLeod finished in double figures for Allegheny with 15 and 10 points, respectively.

Elmira will look to rebound, as they will play the loser of the University of Rochester and Wells game in the consolation game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
