Rochester, NY – The Elmira College Men's Basketball team fell to Wells College 66-52 in the consolation game of the University of Rochester Tournament Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Express to 1-4, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 0-5.
Both teams shot well from the floor in the first half as the Purple and Gold made 43 percent of its shots, while Wells converted 53 percent of its field goals in the opening half. Wells used a 10-0 spurt early in the game to take a 12-2 lead. Matt Newell '14 (Cranston, RI -- St. Andrew's) continued his hot play for Elmira, tallying seven points and four rebounds in the first period, but the Express led 39-28 at intermission.
EC held its own on the glass against an NCAA Tournament team from a year ago, as Wells held a slight rebounding advantage at 35-34. Mabior Mayen led all scorers with 19 points and added 10 rebounds, while Kevin Marseille tallied 12 points. Newell led Elmira with nine points and seven rebounds, while Kurt Dutcher '14 (Gaylord, MI -- Gaylord) finished with nine points and David Borelli '15 (Rochester, NY -- Bishop Kearney) registered eight points off the bench.
The Soaring Eagles host their first home game of the season Tuesday when they take on SUNY Fredonia in non-conference action at 7:00 p.m. in Speidel Gymnasium.
