La Plume, PA -- Entering the match with a 2-0 advantage the Soaring Eagles Men's Tennis team earned their 5th win of the 2011 season as they defeated the Giants of Keystone College, 7-2. With only five players Keystone was forced to forfeit matches at third doubles and sixth singles.
In doubles play Gorav Simlote '13 (Syracuse, NY -- Jamesville-Dewitt) and Sam Pine '14 (Elmira Heights, NY -- Thomas Edison) tallied a 9-8 (7-5) win at the second spot. This was their second straight victory at the two position. Keystone would claim their first point of the day at first doubles, taking the match at 8-5.
Gabe Cortes '11 (Miami, FL -- Miami Country Day School) kicked off singles play as he put up doubles zeros at first singles, 6-0, 6-0. The Giants claimed their second and final point of the evening at the second position. With the score at 4-2 Elmira would go on to take the final three singles matches at the 3rd, 4th and 5th spots.
Steffan Waters '13 (Elmira, NY -- Elmira Free Academy) won his third match of the year as he downed his opponent at the fourth spot 6-2, 6-0. Pine finished next as he claimed a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the fifth spot. At third singles Simlote would have to rally for his fifth win of the year. After dropping the first set 5-7, Simlote found his rhythm as he dropped only two games in the following two sets for a 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 win.
With today's win Elmira improves to 5-5 on the season. The Soaring Eagles will hit the courts again on Monday, April 25th as they travel to take on Roberts Wesleyan College in a non-conference match. Doubles play is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
