Women’s Tennis Sails Past Pioneers

Elmira, NY -- EC Women's Tennis earned their first win of the 2011 season this afternoon as they defeated the Utica College Pioneers in another epic Empire 8 head-to-head. Elmira took the contest as they cruised to a 9-0 victory. 

 

The Soaring Eagles started the match sluggish, but soon found themselves to be dominating the court taking all three doubles points. Alex Putney '12 (Dundee, NY -- Hammondsport) and Bri Palmiero '12 (Rochester, NY -- Bishop Kearney) took the first doubles 8-4. Amy Schmidt '15 (Batavia, NY -- Batavia) and Melanie Walker '13 (Scranton, PA -- Scranton) took second doubles 8-4 while Kayla Fitzgerald '15 (Thomaston, CT – Thomaston) and Elyse Colby '12 (Owego, NY -- Coronado) took third doubles 8-1.  

 

In singles action Purple and Gold demolished the Pioneers, only giving up 10 games total.  Palmiero with the toughest match sailed through the first set giving up only one game, but the second set gave her much more trouble. She finally edged out Jen Persio in the second set tiebreaker 7-5. At second singles was newcomer Schmidt were she dominated 6-0, 6-0 and clinched the match for the Soaring Eagles. Walker at third singles made quick work of her opponent winning 6-0, 6-0. Fitzgerald and Putney both posted one game shutouts at the fourth and fifth positions. Micah Moskoff '14 (Somerset, MA -- Somerset) at the sixth singles position wins her first start of the season 6-0, 6-1.

 

Elmira will look to build on the success they found today as they travel to Oneonta, NY Monday to take on SUNY Oneonta.
