Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College Men's Soccer team got down early but poured on the offensive attack in the second half to beat a gritty Wilkes University squad 4-1 Monday afternoon in Elmira. The Soaring Eagles extend their undefeated streak to eight games at 8-0 overall and 2-0 in Empire 8 play. The Colonels drop to 4-4 overall.
Wilkes University got up early as they scored roughly halfway into the first half. Jim Moran fed Eric McAnena, putting the Colonels in front 1-0 at the break.
Three minutes into the second half the Soaring Eagles came roaring back as they knotted the game at one. Edward Michelson '12 (Winsted, CT -- Cheshire) took a free kick from the left side and hit Andre Germano '15 (Campinas, Brazil -- Winchendon School) cutting from right to left. Germano flicked the ball into the left side of the net.
In the 56th minute Ryan Limero '14 (Belchertown, MD -- Dublin School) fed a ball up to a cutting Ernesto Valverde '14 (East Hampton, NY -- East Hampton) along the left side of the 18. Valverde was taken down in the box, leading to a Germano penalty kick, which he finished, beating the keeper to the left. Thirty eight seconds later Germano fed Matthew who flicked it past Wilkes keeper Dave Marr for a 3-1 EC lead. The Purple and Gold poured on the attack one minute later when Michelson fed Feldman for his second score of the day.
Jared Micheller '12 (Avon, CT – The Winchendon School) and Brian Schuppel '13 (Walton, NY -- Walton) finished with three stops in net for Elmira, while Marr made nine saves for the Colonels.The Soaring Eagles put their undefeated record on the line Saturday when they host conference foe St. John Fisher at noon.
