Canton, NY – Chris Cassidy '14 scored a game-high 17 points but it was not enough as the Elmira College Men's Basketball team fell, 62-50, to host St. Lawrence Saturday afternoon in Burkman Gymnasium. The win improves the Saints to 1-3 overall, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 0-5.
Elmira cut the deficit to five points (46-41) with 9:09 remaining, but the Saints were able to close the game with a 16-9 run for their first victory of the season.
St. Lawrence, which led 29-22 at halftime, stretched its lead to as many as 13 points in the second half before Elmira crept back to within five on a three-pointer by
Cassidy at the 9:09 mark. The Saints, however, made several key offensive plays and were 5-of-6 from the line in the final minutes to stretch their lead back into double figures for the final 12 point margin.
St. Lawrence outrebounded Elmira 46-27 in the game, though the Soaring Eagles committed five fewer turnovers than the Saints (15-10). The Soaring Eagles held a 14-9 points off turnovers advantage while the Saints finished with a 22-8 points in the paint edge.
Cassidy tallied 17 points, while
Neil Randolph '15 added 10 in the scoring column.
Dan O'Brien '13 recorded seven points for the Soaring Eagles.
Junior Janpeter Brase had a team-high 13 points and five rebounds, while junior Al Jones and sophomore Tell White tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively. White and Jones also combined for seven rebounds and five assists, while Jones scored seven of his points in the final stretch to keep the momentum in the home team's favor.
The Men's Basketball team opens conference play Tuesday when it travels to take on Ithaca College starting at 8:00 p.m.
