Hamburg, NY – The Elmira College Men's Basketball team dropped a non-conference battle, 71-66, to host Hilbert College Saturday afternoon in Hamburg. The win improves the Hawks to 9-2, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 0-8.
The Soaring Eagles came out red-hot from the floor shooting 5-for-8 from beyond the arc and 58 percent overall in the first half. After back-to-back threes by
Neil Randolph '15 and
John Mullane '16, the Soaring Eagles took a 33-26 lead. However, after a quick timeout from the Hilbert coach to settle his team down, the Hawks made a small run to close out the half 35-32.
Chris Cassidy '14 led the Soaring Eagles with 11 points in the first half while
Derrick Vogel '14 and
Matt Newell '14 led the team with three assists a piece.
The second half remained a close battle between the two teams exchanging leads throughout the twenty minutes. Hilbert took control late in the second half, leading 63-59 with 1:40 left. Elmira attempted a late comeback but the Hawks hit their free-throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Cassidy, Randolph and
Josh Keys '14 led the Soaring Eagles in scoring.
Cassidy recorded 18 points and eight boards,
Randolph went 3-for-5 from downtown tallying 14 points, and
Keys shot 4-for-5 from the three line finishing with 12 points.
Vogel led the team with five assists and added eight points, while
Mullane, Newell and
Dutcher also contributed combining for 12 points and five assists.
The EC Men's Basketball team will have a couple weeks off before returning to the court Friday, December 28th and Saturday, December 29th in the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Florida. Friday the Purple and Gold squad will play the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 8:00 p.m. Saturday the Soaring Eagles will play Union College at 8:00 p.m.
