Winchester, VA – The Elmira College Men's Lacrosse team held on to a late second half lead taking down the Hornets of Shenandoah University, 12-8, on Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 2-0, while the loss drops the Hornets to 0-6.
In the beginning of the contest Shenandoah took the early lead scoring at the 5:31 and 8:13 mark of the first quarter to go up 2-0. EC finally got on the board with just over three minutes remaining in the opening frame when
David Evert '14 (Niagara Falls, NY -- Niagara Wheatfield) scored off a pass from
Brady Richards '14 (Cortice, ONT -- The Hill Academy). About one minute later the Soaring Eagles tied the game at two all when
Mike DeMar '15 (Macedon, NY -- Palmyra Macedon) found the back of the net.
TJ White '12 (Collegeville, PA -- Methacton) was credited with an assist on the play.The score stayed 2-2 at the end of the first quarter with the Purple and Gold carrying momentum into the second quarter. In the second quarter EC took the lead, 5-2, with the combination of
Evert and
White converting on two of Elmira's three goals in that stretch. The Hornets responded with Bryan Pope assisting Chris Frazier to bring the score to 5-3 in favor of EC at halftime.
In the start of the third quarter Shenandoah tied the game at 5-5 with Pope and David Estoclet scoring extra-attacker goals. The Purple and Gold stepped up its play, scoring three more goals to regain the lead once again. The Hornets tried to trim the deficit, but the Soaring Eagle offense continued to cruise, scoring four more goals in the fourth quarter.
Evert led the Soaring Eagle attack scoring a game-high six goals, while
Richards was the second leading scorer with three goals and two assists.
Barrett Gast '12 (Orchard Park, NY -- Orchard Park) led the EC defense causing three turnovers and picking up three ground balls while also recording his first goal of the season.
Dave Bucchino '13 (Cedar Grove, NJ -- Bow) earned the win in net for EC recording 15 saves, while Tyler Quinn picked up the loss making 15 saves for Shenandoah.
The Soaring Eagles return to action on Wednesday, March 14th when they take on Keuka College at Elmira Free Academy starting at 3:30 p.m.
