Chris Cassidy '14, including 21 in the second half, was not enough as the Men's Basketball team fell to visiting Nazareth College, 71-65, Friday evening in Speidel Gymnasium. The win improves the Golden Flyers to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in Empire 8 play, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 1-12 overall and 0-4 in conference competition.
The contest proved to be a tale of two halves for Elmira. Nazareth had a balanced attack in the opening half to take a 44-30 lead into intermission. EC used a 21-5 spurt in the first 7:07 out of the break to take a 51-49 lead with 10:16 remaining.
Cassidy scored 15 of the Soaring Eagle points on the run. Naz's only three points came from the charity stripe.
The game seesawed back-and-forth with four ties over the next six minutes of play. With 4:06 remaining the two Empire 8 foes were tied at 61 apiece. Despite a tremendous Soaring Eagle comeback with great grit and determination it would not be enough as the Golden Flyers outscored Elmira 10-4 down the stretch for the 71-65 victory.
Cassidy finished with 29 points and six rebounds while shooting a remarkable 13-for-17 from the field.
Derrick Vogel '14 tallied 10 points, five assists, three steals, and just one turnover in 38 minutes for EC.
Brad Ford recorded a double-double in the form of 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead Nazareth, while Tyshun Stephens added 20 in the scoring column.
The Men's Basketball team hits the road when it takes on Houghton tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
