Pittsford, NY – Andrew Ciampichini '15 registered his first career hat trick as the EC Men's Hockey team took down the Nazareth College Golden Flyers, 9-5, Thursday evening at the Sports Centre at Monroe Community College. The Soaring Eagles improve to 8-9-0 overall and 3-4-0 in ECAC West action, while the Golden Flyers fall to 5-10-1 overall and 0-6-0 in conference play.
The Golden Flyers were able to gain the early edge and score just over five minutes into the game with Matt Conway scoring the goal, while Jon-Paul Durso and Zach Lewis assisted on the play. EC was able to respond at the 8:30 mark when
Ciampichini put it into the back of the net for his first score of the night. Nazareth was able to get on top later at the 12:50 mark on a power play when Ben Waldman lit the lamp, while Mark Zovarin and Julius Tamasy assisted. Although the Soaring Eagles would get more opportunities in the period, the score remained at 2-1 after the end of the first.
In the second period EC came out dictating play evening up the score at 2-2 at the 3:09 mark when
Greg Whittle '16 found the back of the net. Assisting on the goal were
Michael Collins '16 and
Jesper Strale '14. About two minutes later
Whittle converted on his second goal of the game to give EC a 3-2 lead with
Collins and
Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 assisting on the play. 16 seconds later EC stretched out its lead when
Tommy Sumi '16 found the back of the net with
Brian Depp '16 and
Tyler Campbell '13 assisting. Less than three minutes later Elmira got on the board again when
Ciampichini assisted classmate
Josh Burnell '15 on a score to make it 5-2. At the 16:51 mark
Ciampichini found the back of the net for his second score of the game with
Burnell and to
D'Arcy Oakes '13 assisting on the play.
In the final period Nazareth gained momentum and started a comeback at the 4:26 mark when Packy Jones assisted Scott Dawson on a score. Nazareth was able to narrow down the lead to 6-5 when Jones and Waldman each registered goals at the 9:56 and 10:17 marks, respectively. However, EC was able to turn the tables at the 15:36 mark when
Carter Shinkaruk '16 lit the lamp giving EC the two goal lead, while
Depp helped out on the play.
Ciampichini was able to record his final score and first unassisted shorthanded goal of the season at the 17:04 mark giving EC an 8-5 lead. The final score of the game came at the 18:14 mark
Sumi passed it up to
Burnell for the empty net score.
Darren MacDonald '13 earned the win for EC making 27 saves on the night, while Ed Zdolshek suffered the loss for Nazareth making 32 saves.
The EC Men's Hockey team will return to action tomorrow night when it hosts eighth-ranked Utica College at the Murray Athletic Center in ECAC West action. Puck set to drop at 7:00 p.m.
