Men’s Hockey Comeback Falls Short in Loss to Lakers

Box Score

Pine Valley, NY – The Elmira College Men's Ice Hockey team proved relentless cutting the deficit to just one goal on two different occasions but ultimately fell, 5-2, to visiting Oswego State Friday evening at the Murray Athletic Center. The win improves the Lakers to 12-2-0, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 5-9-0.

Just over two minutes into the opening period the Lakers went on the power play after a Soaring Eagle high sticking penalty.  EC used a strong penalty kill to stave off the extra attacking Oswego State unit. However, the Lakers got on the board at the 6:20 mark of the period when Luke Moodie corralled a loose puck behind the net and fed a quick pass to Paul Rodrigues who netted the game's first score.

Although Oswego State controlled the puck a majority of the first 20 minutes and held a 15-9 shots edge, the Purple and Gold trailed just 1-0 on the scoreboard after one.

At the 1:49 mark of the second frame OSU extended its lead when Luke Moodie lit the lamp off passes from Rodrigues and Jon Whitelaw. Just 34 seconds later EC answered back when Brian Depp '16 played a nice pass on the break to classmate Carter Shinkaruk '16 who beat Laker goaltender Andrew Hare.

The Lakers reclaimed a two goal lead 8:57 into the second period when David Titanic found the back of the net off a pass from Chris Carr as the two teams continued a rapid pace of play. The Soaring Eagles once again rebutted with a quick strike 35 seconds later when Liam Burtt '16 played the puck in the defensive end to Tyler Campbell '13 who fed the puck up the boards where Tommy Sumi '16 gathered it and made a quick move to beat Hare stick side.

At the 17:52 mark of period Oswego State regained a two-goal lead for the third time in the contest when Nick Rivait scored off a dish from Chris Muise. The Lakers outshot Elmira 18-10 in the second stanza.

After the majority of the third period was scoreless for both teams and the game remained 4-2, Elmira pulled its goaltender for the extra skater edge. However, it resulted in a late empty-netter by Whitelaw, as Rodrigues and Moodie tallied helpers on the play.

Darren MacDonald '13 made a remarkable 38 stops in net for Elmira, while Hare made 21 saves for the Lakers.

The EC Men's Hockey team returns to action next Friday, January 11th when it travels to take on Morrisville State starting at 7:00 p.m.
