Pine Valley, NY -- After coming off a tough loss the night before, the Elmira College men's ice hockey team (2-2-0, 2-2-0 ECAC West) bounced back with a 4-2 win over Nazareth College (1-2-1, 0-2-1 ECAC West). EC netminder
Sal Magliocco '17 made a career high 42 saves in tonight's contest while fourth-year forward
Jesper Strale '14 totaled two points on one goal and an assist.
The first period was filled with physical plays as each team delivered big hit after big hit. With so many hits coming in the period, multiple penalties were assessed, leading to three power play chances for the Golden Flyers and four for the Soaring Eagles.
Elmira would strike first, oddly enough, on Nazareth's power play. After blocking a shot from the blue line,
Liam Burtt '16 nudged the puck out of the Elmira zone to
Greg Whittle '16 who wristed a shot from the slot, beating the Nazareth goalie through the five-hole.
Then, with the first period nearly complete,
Josh Burnell '15 would put the Soaring Eagles ahead on a man-up situation as he buried a slap shot from the left faceoff circle for a power play goal. Elmira's
Eric David '15 and Whittle picked up assists on the Burnell goal, which would hold up through the end of the period as the Soaring Eagles took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Nazareth would pull to within one goal of Elmira at the 4:52 mark of the second period as Scott Andler registered a power play goal for the Golden Flyers.
Elmira's
Jesper Strale '14 gave the Soaring Eagles back their two goal cushion by scoring a power play goal at the 10:46 mark of the second period. Strale buried a shot from the right faceoff circle, beating the Nazareth goalie on the left pad side. Burtt and
Brian Depp '16 would pick up assists on the EC goal.
Less than two minutes later, Strale would play a large role in Elmira's next goal as his pass through the slot reached
Carter Shinkaruk '16 who would bury the goal, putting EC ahead 4-1. Strale and
Tommy Sumi '16 would be credited with assists on the Elmira score.
The Soaring Eagles carried their 4-1 lead into the second intermission and owned a 33-to-27 advantage in shots on goal.
In the third period, Nazareth trimmed the EC lead to two with a goal by Justin LaCorte at the 5:05 mark. However, this would be as close as Nazareth would get as the Soaring Eagles closed out the game, earning their second win of the year, 4-2.
EC goalie
Sal Magliocco '17 had a career night in net, denying the Golden Flyers on 42 attempts, a career high for the rookie netminder.
The EC men's ice hockey team will look for their third win of the year as they travel to take on Brockport State on Friday, November 15th in a non-conference matchup. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:00 p.m.
