Second Half Struggles Down Men’s Basketball Against Hartwick

Oneonta, NY – The Elmira College Men's Basketball team struggled to score the ball in the second half as it fell to host Hartwick College, 64-44, Saturday evening in Lambros Arena. The loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 6-17 overall and 3-9 in Empire 8 play, while the win improves the Hawks to 12-11 and 4-8.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw Elmira lead by just two and Hartwick open up as much as a seven point lead. The Hawks led 27-20 with 4:38 left in the opening half after a Jared Suderley three-pointer. The Soaring Eagles closed the half on a 9-2 run that included a pair of treys from Derrick Vogel '14 and Josh Keys '14. Elmira led 29-28 at intermission.

'Wick used an 11-3 run out of halftime that included two treys from Suderley and two baskets inside from Kyle Bradley to take a 40-31 lead six minutes into the second half. The Soaring Eagles trimmed the lead to 44-38 with 8:27 remaining after a Keys three-pointer. The Hawks used a 17-4 run to open up a 19 point lead with just over two minutes remaining and cruised to the 64-44 victory.

Chris Cassidy '14 paced Elmira with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Vogel added 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. Bradley tallied 18 points and 11 rebounds on 70 percent shooting, while Suderley added 16 points and five rebounds.

The Hawks held a huge 36-12 edge in points in the paint and a 40-29 advantage in rebounds. EC shot just 32 percent from the field in the game, while 'Wick converted on 46 percent of its field goal attempts.
The Men's Basketball team returns to action Friday when it travels to take on Nazareth College starting at 8:00 p.m.
