Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Softball team used a strong offensive performance to sweep visiting Morrisville State, 8-0 and 14-1, Friday evening at Eldridge Park Stadium. The wins improve the Soaring Eagles to 4-4, while the losses drop the Mustangs to 0-6.
Game One
Elmira got off to a good start in the bottom of the first inning as
Katie Dore '15 led off the frame with a double to center field.
Dore then advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Mikayla Bean '14 reached on an infield single before stealing second.
Ashley Palmer '16 hit a blooper to center field to plate
Dore for the first run of the game.
Megan Anderson '15 found a hole in right field to knock in
Bean as the Soaring Eagles finished the first inning scoring two runs.
Alex Puglisi '14 led off the bottom of the second with a single and stolen base.
Krystal Bupp '14 followed up with a one-bagger to right center and advanced to second on the throw home.
Bean ripped a double down the left field line plating
Puglisi and
Bupp to open a four-run advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth
Puglisi started off the inning with a walk, while
Bupp came through with a single. After
Puglisi and
Bupp each stole a base,
Dore doubled to left field clearing the bases. Later in the inning
Palmer reached on a fielder's choice and
Dore scored on the play, with Elmira earning the 8-0 victory.
Puglisi pitched a complete game one hit shutout over six innings striking out 10 batters in the win. Jenna D'Ercole went five and one-third innings giving up 10 hits, eight runs and struck out five batters.
Game Two
The Soaring Eagles used four runs in the first, second and third innings to down the Mustangs, 14-1 in game two on Friday.
Dore led off the first inning with a walk and
Bean followed getting hit by a pitch.
Palmer laid down a beautiful bunt down the third base line to get an infield hit and load the bases with no outs.
Anderson then lined a bases clearing triple to right-center field to open up a 3-0 lead.
Alex Andrade '13 capped off the scoring for the inning grounding out to third plating
Anderson.
Morrisville picked up its lone run of the evening on a Tori Schultz single to left that plated Kayla Walker. The Purple and Gold responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Anderson singled to shortstop scoring both
Bean and
Bupp.
Andrade then reached on a fielder's choice plating
Palmer. After a Mustang wild pitch
Andrade added another run.
Anderson and
Sarah Johnson '15 each used 2 RBI singles in the third inning to tack on an additional four runs.
Andrade singled to left center in the fourth frame for the 14-1 final.
Katie Hobson '13 pitched five innings giving up four hits, one run, one walk and struck out nine batters. Tiffany Burks gave up 12 hits, 14 runs, six walks and fanned one batter in the loss.
