Pittsford, NY – The Elmira College Softball team split games with the Nazareth College Golden Flyers, 2-0 and 9-4, Saturday afternoon ending their win streak at nine games. The Soaring Eagles improve to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in the Empire 8, while Golden Flyers fall to 3-11 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
Although the Soaring Eagles were able to get several hits during game one, they would not be able to score until the top of the sixth and seventh innings to secure their ninth victory in a row.
Alex Puglisi '14 earned her sixth consecutive victory on the mound pitching seven innings giving up three hits and striking out 15 batters.
Alex Andrade '13 and
Puglisi hit well from behind the plate earning two hits, while
Mikayla Bean '14 and
Abby Coyne '16 each earned an RBI in the game.
In game two
Andrade was able to give EC the early initial, 1-0, lead in the top of the first with an RBI single to center field scoring
Puglisi. Nazareth rallied in the next two innings to score nine straight runs. In the top of the fourth
Puglisi came through with a two RBI double, while
Bean came through later with an RBI single narrowing down the lead to 9-4. However, Nazareth pitcher Danae Wetherbee was able to hold of the late Elmira surge earning their first conference victory.
Sarah Johnson '15 pitched the first third giving up three hits and four runs.
Katie Hobson '13 pitched the next inning and two thirds giving up five runs and seven hits, while striking out a batter.
Puglisi came in for the final four innings giving up one hit and two walks, while striking out four batters.
The Purple and Gold will return to action tomorrow when they face off with tough powerhouse St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, NY. Game one is set to start at 1:00 p.m. and game two is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
