Blinkinsop Plays Strong in Women’s Lax Loss to Ducks

Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Lacrosse team was tied with visiting Stevens Institute of Technology at halftime but was outscored by six in the second half as it fell, 12-6, Saturday afternoon at Campus Field. The win improves the Ducks to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in Empire 8 play, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 4-5 and 0-2.

Elmira got off to a terrific start scoring the first four goals of the contest. Just 1:21 into the game Marki Michaels '13 tallied an unassisted marker. At the 9:33 mark Jessica Blinkinsop '14 found the back of the net on a free position shot. Less than two minutes later Emma Schepers '14 made a great pass to Moorea Spoljaric '16 who recorded the 20th score of her rookie season. Less than a minute later with 17:48 on the clock

Blinkinsop registered her second goal of the day to put the Purple and Gold up 4-0.
Stevens responded as Caitlyn Hughes netted back-to-back goals over the next three minutes. Spencer Waybright added two scores and Mackenzie Swartout found the back of the net once as Stevens took its first lead of the game at 5-4 with just more than six minutes remaining in the opening half.

Natalie Robinson '15 added a free position goal with 3:22 remaining in the first half as the two teams were tied, 5-5, at intermission.

The Ducks dictated play in the second half as they outscored Elmira 7-1 in the second frame. Six different players registered goals in the stanza led by two from Kara Rafferty. Michaels scored the lone goal in the final 30 minutes for Elmira.

Stevens held advantages in shots on goal (23-12) and ground balls (34-17), while the teams were even in draw controls (10-10). Mary Kate Gellerman '13 made 11 saves in net for Elmira, while Meg Collins stopped six shots for the Ducks.

Blinkinsop paced Elmira offensively with two goals, four ground balls, four draw control wins and two caused turnovers. Spoljaric added four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Erin Duffy '14 and Laura Bartus '13 recorded three caused turnovers apiece.
